Very common, mostly along small arroyos; shrubs or small trees to 5 m tall, the nodes often with single or paired spines. Mostly ascending, woody branches reaching 22 cm diameter 0.5 m near ground, and well-branched -- not as spindle as A. neovernicosa in nearby Chihuahua desertscrub vegetation.
