BBNP Permit BIBE 94-041, Texas State Permit SPR 0493-607; Orig. received as Opuntia violacea, syn. change per CITES Cac Checklist; collector's notes: Frequent low-growing prickly pear, 2-3 pads high, pads gray tinged with maroon-purple, spines blackish, flowers and buds numerous, perianth light yellow with red-maroon mid-stripes and bases, style creamy, stigma lobes reddish-brown with light yellow-cream apiculate outgrowths; habitat desert scrub: full sun; associated species-Fouquieria, Yucca treculeana, Larrea, Ephedra, Dasylirion leiophyllum, Prosopis glandulosa, Bouteloua sp.

Pads gray with purple tinting; spines dark reddish-brown almost black; flowers collected late morning, diameter 53-79 mm, length 80-101 mm, outer perianth lemon yellow with pink at base, inner perianth deep lemon yellow with red center; additional flowers collected in April 2012; stigma lobe number 5-6, yellow, white or pale yellow with rose at base; filaments pale green; fruit collected 3 November 2011; dry fruit magenta, diameter 10-12 mm, length 32-41 mm; fleshy fruit gray-green with magenta highlights, diameter 17-18 mm, length 42-55 mm; seeds tan.
